Play Peter Pan: Forget You’re a Grown-up with These Dates

by Ella

Remember your first few dates? You spent hours prepping for the event even though it was just your parents dropping you off at the movies. You and your date barely spoke, except to joke about your English teacher or share locker room drama. The sexual tension was incredible, and you had to stop holding hands every fifteen minutes in order to wipe the sweat onto your pants. You may not miss the nerves, but especially with a shot of nostalgia, middle-school date ideas can bring playfulness to a new relationship. Remember simpler times with these potential plans, in the city and at home:

Ride the Cyclone at Coney Island Though adults are commonplace at amusement parks, the oversized stuffed animals and saccharine snacks at Coney Island automatically invoke childhood memories. Ride the rickety Cyclone and then take advantage of the adrenaline to be extra affectionate (i.e. make out on the beach). Restore your energy after with a funnel cake and some cotton candy.

Go camping in your living room After you’ve had a couple “getting to know” you dinner dates, invite your intro to your house. Raid your linen closet for all the best blankets and make sure your pantry is stocked with s’mores supplies. Part 1: Roast hot dogs (on the barbeque or in the oven, whatever you have) then make your marshmallows golden brown over the burner. Part 2: Use the blankets to build a fort, with a window for stargazing or TV-watching. Then cuddle up close, because we all know camping gets cold.

Hang out like it’s after school Get popsicles from People’s Pops’ East Village location and find an empty bench in Tompkins Square Park. If you have a stoop, that will do just as well for the main event: share your favorite music with your date, teenager-on-a-schoolbus style, one headphone each. You may no longer own a walkman or even an iPod mini, but the intimacy of listening to the latest Shins or Strokes hasn’t changed.

Explore the play space on Governor’s Island Last year, Governor’s Island hosted a colorful, alternative playground structure. When it reopens this month, it will again be home to public art installations and plenty of open space for bike-riding and strolling. The developers want it to be a place of “leisure and delight,” so expect more whimsical additions soon. Pack a picnic and reminisce on back-in-the-day soccer games with juice pouches. The best part? They’re filled with wine.

Eat with your fingers Indulge your age-old love of carbs and sauces (smeared on your face, ideally), and stop by Pommes Frites, by Saint Mark’s. Since the place is tiny, get a cone of their delicious Belgian fries to go and spread out your sauces on any nearby stoop. Then walk to JoeDough for a Stoner’s sandwich–we’re pretty sure it’ll make your grade-school self drool in delight.

Spring Fever Series: Beer Gardens Part 1

by Sabrina Cohen

There’s nothing like basking in the spring sun at a wooden picnic table among a sea of friendly faces, while sipping an ice-cold, perfectly brewed beer. Yes, I love beer gardens. Best. Creation. Ever. Perhaps it’s because they recall a combination of fond memories from both college and day camp. Sigh. In keeping with that spirit, here are just a few of NYC’s best beer gardens.

Respect your elders. The Bohemian Hall Beer Garden in Astoria dates back to 1919, making it the oldest beer garden in NYC. It’s long been a local hot spot—enough so, that many Manhattanites actually venture on the train for a visit. The Czech-inspired establishment sports over 800 seats, with plenty of room to spare for wandering the traditional gravel grounds. Live music and festivals are popular, as is the fine selection of brews on tap.

The Standard Biergarten is anything but. Located at the Standard Hotel, in the uber trendy meatpacking district, this place puts a chic spin on the old tradition. It sits beneath a stretch of the newly rebuilt High Line Park overpass, where red stone pavers and exposed brick add casual charm, and the high-gloss wooden tables are candlelit at night for a bit of suggestive romance.

Local West beautified their gritty surroundings by creating an urban beer garden oasis amidst the skyscrapers of Penn Plaza. This 6,000 square foot space boasts 16 international beers and a sufficient menu of eats. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after work. When you’re sufficiently buzzed, the Penn Station is mere steps away.

Are you a fan of beer gardens? Tell us your thought below!

Celebrate the onset of the unofficial mating season by heading to one of these swanky rooftop spots for your next MeetMoi matchup. Stay tuned for more date spots to honor all things spring!

  1. For those who say size matters, 230 Fifth hails as New York’s largest rooftop garden. The massive 22,000 square foot space juxtaposes impeccably pruned greenery and warm wood benches against a sea of concrete skyscrapers. Tropical charm ensues as you sip your coconut pineapple martini under the stars, high above the hustle-and-bustle. If it happens to get chilly, grab a complimentary red robe and cozy up with your date under a space heater, or head inside to the Penthouse Lounge.
  2. The Press Lounge is 8,500 square feet of sophisticated swank sitting atop the Ink48 Hotel. With its unobstructed 360° views, slick Miami-inspired design, and notable wine list, it’s no surprise this space has won its share of awards. Win some accolades with your date as you share sprawling views of the Hudson over seasonal small plates and classically refined cocktails. If this place doesn’t ignite the romance, nothing will.
  3. Going Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel means being transported to an urban oasis with eye-popping panoramic views of Manhattan. Enjoy bites like baby lamb lollipops and drinks like The Chrysler—made with the finest honey, fresh lemon and lime, and topped with a little French love juice (aka champagne)! Upstairs brings the living room vibe outdoors with neo-gothic furniture and a refreshingly anti-patio sophistication.

Start Spring Early with Fresh Dates in NYC

By Ella Riley-Adams

The first stanza of an e e cummings poem encapsulates the feeling of the season perfectly: “sweet spring is your/time is my time is our/time for springtime is lovetime/and viva sweet love”. March means we can start crawling out from under the hibernation covers, hoping for warmer weather and carefree days. Though New York will probably still experience a few more winter storms and quite a bit of rain, we say it’s not too early to start celebrating sweet springtime. Invite your next MeetMoi intro to one of the following, and let love bloom:

Learn about the Flowers Every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m., the Brooklyn Botanic Garden gives a Seasonal Highlights Guided Tour. All you need to do is show up–no reservations or payment necessary. It’s too early for their official “Spring in Bloom” tour, but you’ll still see some beautiful plants and feel refreshed by the time outside. If you’re in search of color and willing to spend money on admission, go to the annual Orchid Show. Afterwards, walk over to Grumpy’s in Park Slope for a cup of coffee and inevitably delicious scone.

Walk the Highline Especially if you spent summer reading and people watching at the Highline, New York’s urban-cool park path will evoke memories of warm days. Start making this season just as special with your MeetMoi acquaintance and a Chelsea jaunt. Check out the latest billboard art and see if you can spot any bird nests. Again, if the March chill is too much, get down near Chelsea Market and get a latte at Blue Bottle on W 15th.

Sip on Fresh Cocktails The Mulberry Project’s Raspberry Rose cocktail sounds as luxurious as swimming in a pool full of Perrier. With lemon and homemade raspberry syrup, it’s got to be just as refreshing. Order two, and move into the Project’s intimate garden space to soak up some sun. You’d never guess such an enclave exists in the middle of Little Italy, but now that you know, you’re obliged to take advantage.

Find Foraged Food In his NYMag guide on “Where to Eat 2013,” Adam Platt declares, “Foraging is now an urban obsession.” Top chefs in New York are using local, seasonal plants to concoct extensive tasting menus and genre-defying plates. Platt goes on to mention several restaurants that are on the foraging frontier. Go to any one of them and you’ll likely be transported through taste to a field or forest, where you and your date can frolic in the green.

Get Wet See if last summer’s swim suit still fits and try it out at one of NYC’s indoor pools (check out Shopbop if you need a new cool option quick). Challenge your date to a breath-holding contest, see who can tread water the longest, or go for a good old-fashioned swim race. It’s always fun to get physical (out of bed) with a new date, and swimming is particularly refreshing after you’ve been bundled up all winter.

Wander the Greenmarket Meet at lunch or spend a Saturday morning in Union Square, checking out the goat cheese, fresh pasta, and berries on display at the Greenmarket. Ask your date about their connection with Mother Nature; did they ever garden as a kid? Do they know how to drive a tractor? The huge variety of produce at the Greenmarket could inspire all kinds of conversation. And who knows–you might get inspired to make a fresh dinner together later.

Viva sweet love.

Breaking The Ice Without Breaking The Bank: Part 2

by Sabrina Cohen

In this follow up to last week’s post, we highlight more date ideas that conserve your dollars without making you look like a cheap-ster. In fact, these spots are likely to earn you points for creativity. So ditch the typical dinner date and venture out to one of these spots on your next Meetmoi matchup.

DESSERT

Why do dinner when you can go straight to dessert? This new dating trend will keep things light and sweet, and encourages indulging on more than one level. NY’s Blue Hill is a farm-to-table restaurant offering $25 dessert tastings set against the backdrop of a romantic West Village brownstone.

LIVE MUSIC

Rockwood music hall is a live music venue perfect for dating on a dime. The intimate setting allows you to get up close and personal with performers—or your date. Talented up-and-comers grace the stage every night, and cover charges, if any, are minimal. No velvet rope, no BS. Arrive early to snag a candlelit table or cozy chairs in the balcony!

MUSEUMS

Museums offer thoughtful contemplation and instant conversation at seriously reasonable rates. If you live in a large city like NY, chances are you’ve got great options at your fingertips. Try something different like the Merchant Museum—NY’s only 19th century home to survive intact.

WINE BAR

Good wine is artful, sexy, and typically less costly than your average cocktail. The 8th Street Wine Cellar’s warm brick walls and candle lit tables provide subtle sophistication, minus the pretentiousness. Class it up with one of their reasonably priced boutique bottles.

Breaking The Ice Without Breaking The Bank: Part 1

by Sabrina Cohen

Dating not only requires an investment of time, but dollars as well. Even casual dating can quickly become financially hazardous. With a little creativity, however, you can learn to date cost-consciously without looking like a cheapskate. Check out this first installment of fun and subtly frugal dating ideas to try the next time you get that MeetMoi alert.

HOTEL HAPPY HOUR – Most bars offer some kind of happy hour special during the week, and meeting right after work is the perfect time to take advantage under the cover of convenience. Try upscale spots serving HH specials, like the John Dory Oyster Bar in the Ace Hotel.

CONNOISSEUR COFFEE – OK, so coffee can look like a cheap date idea, but it doesn’t have to if you avoid generic spots like Starbucks. Find an interesting cafe featuring specialty caffeinated concoctions, or other distinctive highlights worthy of conversation—cool music, artwork, an outdoor garden, or view for people watching. Milk and Roses in NYC is a perfect example.

LOADED LUNCH – Meeting someone on your lunch hour is a great way to gauge chemistry with limited time and money. Find out what kind of food your date is into and choose a spot with high ratings and low-priced lunch specials. Get a delicious bang for your buck at Tue Thai.

TAPAS TEASE – This Spanish tradition of small plates was designed to encourage conversation. Sharing also inadvertently encourages intimacy. Sampling several dishes is always more fun than one, and it’s likely to satisfy while leaving you and your date wanting just a little more. An authentic tapas bar will likely have killer drinks as well! Try sexy (and scrumptious) Sala One Nine.

Everybody Dance Now: Where to Get Your Groove On in NYC

By Ella Riley-Adams

Rockin' it hard

Finding a place to dance in New York is like spotting a fanny pack in Times Square: they’re everywhere. You’re bound to find some too small, too bourgeois, or too divey, but explore enough and you’ll find the boîte that’s just right. Get riled up and ready to dance with your next MeetMoi date, we’ve got a few high-energy suggestions to start you out:

Sweet & Vicious During summer, Sweet & Vicious is one of our favorite outdoor hangout spots since their garden stays open until midnight and the frozen margaritas are served in boho-chic mason jars. Thankfully, their ample indoor space is still a prime dance spot during winter.  Expect to jump up and down to all your favorite radio hits, mingle with young new media types, and try at least one infamous margarita before you go. Happy hour starts at 3 pm if you’re looking to call it an early night (or trying extra hard to leave work), and the music plays till 4 in the morn.

Beauty Bar This fun, themed bar on East 14th gets points for being different (you can buy a drink and a manicure for $10.00 in the evening) and dance-y. Every Friday, DJ Omri S. Quire and guests promise to spin “a booty-shakin’ mix of nasty soul, dirty rock & roll, smashin’ 80s…freak-beats and everything else!” If you feel like moving your body in new ways on a Friday night, it sounds like Beauty Bar’s got you covered. Their prime downtown location means you and your date will have no problems getting a late night slice of pizza and subway home after you’ve exhausted every little muscle.

Webster Hall Not for the faint of heart, Webster Hall provides a regular roof for one huge party. Expect a lively crowd, varied music, and average drinks. It’s also a rare NY 18-plus space, so you’re bound to see groups of excited teenagers who, depending on your view, make or break the mood. In any case, check their website to plan for the right party (Girls Night Out = free champagne for women) and prepare to exert yourself on the many dance floors. We hear they bounce like trampolines.

Bembe brings a Williamsburg vibe to the concept of a club. They say it best themselves: “Bembe is a continual experiment of environmental design aimed at bringing people a different approach to nightlife interaction.” Take that to mean it’s a laid-back spot that’s open to your “groovy” dance moves and perpetual beads of upper lip sweat. If your date’s down to go wild in Brooklyn, Bembe is your best bet.

All of the Lights: Where to Drink in NYC Holiday Spirit

By Ella Riley-Adams

Starting mid-November, New York is chockablock with holiday spirit. We’re lucky to have sparkling lights all year round (hello, Times Square!), but they kick into high gear when the temperature drops. As you’re girding your loins to overdose on elves and egg nog, we’ve got a few date ideas to bring you good cheer.

Bryant Park Ice Skating is free, but only if you happen to own your own ice skates. Otherwise, it’s $14.00 for skate rental. We hope the price isn’t a deterrent, though, because it’s hard not to love such a central, festive, family-friendly spot. The park hosted a tree lighting ceremony this week, so you’ll be skating under a large shining evergreen.

Even if your date isn’t up for the old tiny-blades-on-slippery-ice activity, you two can browse Bryant Park holiday vendors or have a drink at Celsius, the park’s rink side restaurant.

Columbus Circle Holiday Market The holiday season tends to go hand-in-hand with chaotic consumption, so in lieu of running for Macy’s or Bloomies, we prefer a more leisurely stroll through a local holiday market. Columbus Circle’s is easy to get to and offers a variety of fun gifts, from pretzels to puppets. Invite your MeetMoi intro here and you’ll get to joyously multitask: find the perfect bar of soap for your mother while getting to know a charming new person.

Wythe Hotel Brooklyn Book a dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Reynard’s, or just go for drinks. Either way, make sure you take a trip to the roof of the building to get a twinkly view of Brooklyn and Manhattan. Yes, those lights are there all year round, but it’s worth appreciating them anew. In the frosty air at the holidays, they’re tiny beacons of warmth and comfort.

SantaCon Self-described as “charitable mayhem,” SantaCon is a ridiculous event that involves thousands of people dressed up as Santa Claus. They then proceed to lurch from bar to bar until many are stumbling on their beards and/or stealing candy from children. However, it’s a fun opportunity to meet new festive people and will certainly be a date you remember forever. It’s also for a good cause: last year, Santa raised $10,000.00 for Toys for Tots. If your MeetMoi intro is ready to don the red suit and jingle bells, respond to SantaCon’s Facebook event and then gather on December 15.
